COLLINGTON, Everard Meakin

No.551408, Lance Corporal, Everard Meakin COLLINGTON
Aged 31

Royal Army Ordnance Corps
Killed in Action on Wednesday, 28th May 1941

Everard Meakin Collington was born in Leicestershire (Loughborough Q3-1909 7A:141), son of Everard and Ethel Mary COLLINGTON (née MATTHEWS).

1911 census...Aged 2, he was at Brook Street, Wymeswold, Loughborough with his father Everard COLLINGTON [[28] a farmer born Wymeswold; his mother Ethel Mary [29] born Stafford, sister Nelly [3] and brother Robert Edward [2 months] both born in Wymeswold.

Everard M. Collington is recorded as travelling to Australia on the SS 'Bendigo' 5th July 1929 (London-Sydney) occupation farming, aged 22.
Also E.M. Collington is recorded as travelling to Australia on the SS 'Orama' on 20th July 1929 (London-Sydney) occupation farming, aged 21.
CWGC have him as 36 in 1941 so his age is rather confused. He may well have been the Everard COLLINGTON who signed on in the Leicestershire Yeomanry on 15th February 1931

He married Maisie Cansley JONES, (Loughborough Q4-1933 7A:403) who CWGC have as living in Newmarket (not in Newmarket 1936 directory) and Army Roll of Honour had Everard as residing in Suffolk so presumably this is Moulton. None have been identified in the 1939 register.

It was the time of the German invasion of Crete. The British were evacuating the airfields on the 28th May. 126 were recorded as killed (Greece) on that day and only 6 have known graves ( 5 in Suda Bay), the rest are named on the Athens Memorial. Everard was recorded as missing on 28th May and eventually found buried near KHANIA and re-interred in Suda Bay cemetery on 19th October 1945.
